Minimalist Home Office Ideas
As the economy continues to sour, more and more people are forced to consider alternate means to make money. Many are starting businesses at home and with all the experience built up over the years, why not? Services are still needed, and given that many companies are cutting back on those services, why not offer them yourself?
But first, you need a place to put your computer, phone and client files. Finding the right office furniture isn’t just as simple as matching a look with your wallet. As important as identifying where in the house your new desk will live, it’s important to be realistic about your personality.
Are you a:
• Packrat?
• Minimalist?
• Traditionalist?
• Contemporary thinker?
• A person who likes everything matching?
• An artist at heart?
The Right Furniture For Your Personality
However you answer that question, there is office furniture that will perfectly suit your taste and personality. If you are a minimalist, a desk with no drawers or cubbyholes should work just fine for you. If you are a traditionalist, you probably see yourself behind a stately desk, even if it is stuffed inside the guest bedroom and has to share space with a bed and dresser.
If you are a pack rat, you already know that you are going to have to consider a desk that is huge! But that doesn’t address all your needs. You will likely need a desk that not only has several drawers; you might want to consider a separate filing cabinet and bookshelf.
If you are a modern thinker or an artist at heart, there is office furniture designed to be eye-catching first with the function being a secondary feature.
Where Will This Office Furniture Go?
Once you have determined both your budget and the type of office furniture that fits your personality, the next step is figuring out where it will all go. Ideally, your son or daughter left for college and you can steal his or her room. If that isn’t an option, perhaps you have a basement or can share an office with the guest bedroom. Another option is to carve out a piece of the living room or kitchen.
These are of course the least idea as you will have to compete with traffic – both in terms of noise and the possibility of your furniture being dinged by the dog and kids. If this is the case, you may have to purchase a room divider or a shoji screen and make it clear that this is your office and not a family room.
